For students in Grades K-5, MGSD uses Standards-Based Grading in which skills are assigned a proficiency level that students are expected to reach by the end of each school year. This level represents student understanding or mastery of the particular skill. Progress toward achieving proficiency by the end of the grade is tracked throughout the year and reported quarterly. Students are determined to be at an L (limited progress toward expectations), P (progressing toward expectations), or M (meets expectations). Standards Based Grading allows students to be more aware of what they are expected to learn and their progress through the North Carolina State Standards. It also provides parents with a more detailed outline of their student's growth and achievement. For more information, please read our family letter regarding Standards-Based Grading and/or view the Standards-Based Grading slideshow.
Report Cards are sent home at the end of each quarter. In addition, Interim Reports are sent home midway through each quarter to provide students and parents with a snap shot of their standing at that point in time. Report cards for grades K-5 are customized to reflect Standards Based Grading practices. You can follow this link for an example of our K-5 report cards.
Report cards for grades 6-12 are generated by Powerschool, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's student management system.
