Dear Mooresville Community,
As you know, Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina this past September. As part of relief efforts, some school districts in our region have adopted a school district that was, and continues to be, heavily impacted by the storm. Mooresville Graded School District has adopted Yancey County Schools whose district and families experienced significant damage. Yancey County School District was hit especially hard by Hurricane Helene including the loss of an entire school. Many families also lost their automobiles and homes. An estimated 197 homes in Yancey County were destroyed and 777 homes need major repairs. Yancey County students returned to school on 11/18 for the first time only to deal with a winter weather storm.
Mooresville Graded School District is committed to helping our neighbors in need in Yancey County. We believe the generosity of our community has the ability to provide much-needed support to their affected schools and families. District leadership in Yancey County indicated to us that their most pressing need is for financial donations to support the items below. We are asking members of our community to consider a donation to support one of the following:
Field trips for the students: Yancey County School District was planning on canceling their Spring field trips and CTE competitions that had been planned due to the economic burden caused by Hurricane Helene. MGSD believes we can help keep as much normality as possible for their students and ensure they continue to receive a well-rounded education this school year by helping to offset expenses for planned field trips and CTE competitions.
Christmas and Holiday efforts: Many Yancey County School District families were unhomed due to Helene and are facing severe financial hardships. With the holidays approaching the school district is attempting to ensure students receive gifts this season. School counselors in Yancey County have been collecting lists for their students. Your contribution will ensure those students whose families are unable to afford gifts this year will still have a happy holiday. MGSD will stop accepting donations for this on 12/14/24 in an effort to allow Yancey County leadership time to receive the funds and purchase items.
CTE tiny homes for unhomed families: Yancey County Schools have a robust CTE program that builds tiny homes. They are working to build as many homes as possible to help those people who lost their homes in the storm. If you choose to donate to this program, it will be used to help with the construction materials and permit costs.
By supporting our efforts, you’re not just giving a gift; you’re giving hope. Your kindness will make a real difference in the lives of those affected by this devastating storm.
Please consider making a donation today. Every dollar counts. You can donate online at Mooresville Graded School District Online School Payments. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and you will have the opportunity to designate what project listed above that you want your donation to support.
Thank you for your compassion and generosity. Together, we can help Yancey County School District rebuild stronger.
